Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis on Religious Activism and Freedom’s Erasure

When notions of "religious freedom” are introduced into discourse, rarely is the historical erasure of freedom from certain versions of the bible ever discussed. This erasure, however, is essential to understanding how religious texts have been interfered with by mechanisms of power and control.

In the following interview snippet, Reverend Dr. Liz Theoharis explains how she had to see for herself how "freedom” was removed from the bibles historically given to enslaved peoples in the United States.

After giving an enthralling activism workshop, Reverend Dr. Liz Theoharis sat down with the Organizing Stories team for a Q & A, and the topic religious organizing was explored in greater detail. In the extended clip below, Reverend Theoharis responds to a question from Organizing Stories research assistant Gabriella Carter (’22) on religious activism and intersectionality as a strategic praxis.
